Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory boarding and day school with enrollment of 720 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Divisions Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission-driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond.
 

Stevenson School is seeking a Director of Human Resources. The director of human resources reports to the chief financial officer (CFO) and is a member of Stevenson's leadership council. This position has a high public profile at Stevenson, broadly collaborating with and supporting faculty, staff, and administrators. The director of human resources works closely with the president, CFO, controller, and outside legal counsel to develop key human resources policies, and directs and coordinates activities such as employee benefits, employee relations, employment agreements, compliance, compensation, and residential housing agreements. This is a full-time, 12-month/year position and based on the Pebble Beach Campus. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the president, CFO, division heads, and senior staff in the recruitment and hiring process, including writing and placing ads, reviewing résumés, coordinating on-campus interviews, checking references, verifying credentials, and preparing offers
     
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining effective compliance with all applicable employment regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ERISA), as well as federal and state labor laws, and preparing the EEO-1 report
     
  • Managing risk management processes, including the renewal of all insurance policies; oversees one direct report—a human resources associate who assists with most HR-related activities
     
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate position descriptions
     
  • Supporting the division heads and CFO with employee-related contract and budget items, including compensation analysis, as well as salary and benefit budget comparisons
     
  • Preparing employment, residential, and coaching agreements; administering waivers for all students and related activities; and maintaining secure and confidential human resources files and records
     
  • Advising and consulting with the president, CFO, division heads, senior staff, and outside legal counsel (as necessary) to resolve employee relations issues
     
  • Overseeing and directly engaging in the resolution of delicate personnel matters, seeking at all times to protect Stevenson School’s best interests
     
  • Attending professional conferences, webinars, and workshops to remain current on best practices in human resources and labor laws


Required Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible human resources leadership
  • Excellent strategic, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills
  • Experience administering 403(b) retirement plans and preparing Form 550 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • The capacity to work independently with flexibility, adaptability, and strong attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills, with an emphasis on Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word) and Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs) preferred
  • Possess the highest standard of professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Possess the personal qualities of empathy, high integrity, and kindness—combined with the strength to engage compassionately in difficult conversations and challenging employee-related situations
  • Ability to be a thoughtful listener and a collaborative partner
  • Experience as a human resources generalist, preferably within independent schools 
  • Knowledge of California payroll laws, and SPHR or SHRM-CP certification.
 

The anticipated salary for this position is $150,000 - $175,000, commensurate with experience. In addition to competitive salary, Stevenson provides a comprehensive benefits package. Medical plan benefits include PPO and HSA options offered by Anthem with generous premium coverage provided by the School. Dental and vision plans as well as an FSA program are also available. The School provides generous retirement plan contributions and supports eligible employees with housing and fuel stipends.
