Instrumental Music Instructor, Grades 5 - 12
Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Divisions Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson School is seeking an Instrumental Music Instructor to start July 1, 2025.
The instrumental music instructor will teach multiple instrumental music classes in the upper and middle divisions (grades 5-12), and develop a vision for robust co-curricular offerings across divisions. Current and past instrumental courses have included a variety of offerings: Concert Band, Jazz Combo, String Orchestra, Pit Orchestra for the winter musical, Piano Lab, Rock Band, Pep Band, and Middle School General Music. The ideal candidate will be comfortable and effective in a culture that puts a premium on making our music program experience as accessible to as many students as possible.
Responsibilities Include:
- Communicate with students, parents, and colleagues in a timely and professional manner
- Display excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills
- Maintain and manage sheet music library and instrument inventory
- Organize and prepare for multiple performances and trips throughout the year
- Contribute talents and skills to the school community in additional capacities, including coaching and advising
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- BA in Music or Music Education (MA preferred)
- Professional experience relevant to working with high school students
- Experience with instructional technology, such as Google Tools and other related resources, plus a working knowledge of music production/recording software programs
- Demonstrated mastery of the practice of one or more musical instruments; ability to contribute to vocal instruction and choral direction is highly desirable
- Ability to contribute significantly to an established area of co-curricular life, such as by coaching an interscholastic team at either the junior varsity or varsity level, or overseeing a school publication (yearbook, student art and literary magazine) is highly desirable
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships
- Excellent communication (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust
- Highest level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally competent practice, serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact
The anticipated salary for this position is $55,000 - $95,000, based on experience. In addition to competitive salary, Stevenson provides a comprehensive benefits package and resources to support advanced degree work and professional development including professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel. Medical plan benefits include PPO and HSA options offered by Anthem with generous premium coverage provided by the School. Dental and vision plans as well as an FSA program are also available.
