Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 750 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond. 

Stevenson School is seeking a Middle Division Physical Education Teacher, with a July 1, 2026 start date. The middle division P.E. Teacher plays a vital role in supporting Stevenson School’s mission to prepare students for success in school and their lives beyond school, to foster a passion for learning and achievement, and to help them shape a joyful life. Through physical education, students build confidence, develop healthy habits, strengthen relationships, and cultivate character.

The middle division P.E. teacher designs and delivers an engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate physical education program for students in grades 5–8. The position emphasizes skill development, teamwork, character, sportsmanship, health and fitness, and a positive relationship with movement and wellness.

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic educator who understands the physical, social, and emotional development of adolescents and is committed to building confidence, collaboration, and joy through physical activity.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teach a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum for students in grades 5–8.
  • Design and deliver units that promote physical fitness, character, skill acquisition, teamwork, healthy competition, and lifelong wellness.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of abilities and experience levels, ensuring all students experience growth and success.
  • Emphasize skill development in movement, coordination, strength, endurance, and game strategy.
  • Provide constructive feedback and assessment to support student growth and confidence.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment where all students feel comfortable taking risks and participating.
  • Model and teach sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect for others.
  • Support students’ social and emotional development through intentional instruction and positive relationships.
  • Collaborate with advisory and student support teams as needed to support the whole child
  • Collaborate with the Physical Education and Middle Division teams to design and refine curriculum, assessments, and reporting practices.
  • Align curriculum with school-wide goals around wellness, skill development, and character education.
  • Support school-wide wellness initiatives and student life programming.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to support integrated learning experiences and student well-being.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school community events.
  • Support school events such as field days, outdoor education, assemblies, and student life activities as needed.
 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Education, or related field.
  • Experience teaching physical education to middle school-aged students (grades 5–8) or equivalent preferred
  • Strong understanding of adolescent physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and joyful learning environment.
  • Strong classroom and behavior management skills rooted in positive relationships.
  • Experience integrating wellness, mindfulness, or social-emotional learning into physical education.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with all members of the community 
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Collaborative mindset and strong communication skills
  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with middle and high school students
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and the integrity of all aspects of information disseminated within or external to the school community
  • Commitment to being part of a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community
  • Personality traits appropriate for the teaching of young children including patience and an inexhaustible sense of humor
 

This is a full-time, 10-month per year position. The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $75,000 based on experience. In addition to competitive salary Stevenson offers a substantial benefits package including retirement plan contributions, a menu of Anthem medical plans with generous premium coverage provided by the School, vision and dental group plans and support of ongoing professional development. Stevenson offers housing and fuel stipends for eligible employees. Meals are provided throughout the day when school is in session.
