Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson School is seeking a School Counselor, Grades PK-8 to start immediately. Reporting to the heads of the middle and lower divisions, the School Counselor is a vital member of the Health and Wellness Team, supporting the overall social emotional health of the community. The school counselor is also a member of Stevenson’s crisis response team. Focusing on student well-being, the Counselor will identify and respond to student psychological and emotional challenges through short- and long-term counseling, as well as crisis intervention and risk assessment. This is a  full-time, 10-month/year position based at Stevenson’s Carmel campus. 

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and effective clinician with demonstrated expertise in social-emotional wellness within this age group. The ideal candidate will additionally present a positive, flexible, and helpful attitude, understand organizational or independent school culture, be a skilled communicator with a demonstrated history of impeccable judgment, discipline, and collegiality in managing complicated situations with varied constituencies, and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and systematically with all constituencies of the school. Experience in working with students from historically under-represented populations and from other countries is especially welcome. Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide appropriate short-term therapeutic support in one-one-one and small groups, helping students to develop coping strategies, resiliency, and communication skills
  • Maintain meticulous related notes and records
  • Maintain ongoing communication with faculty and administrators to identify patterns of behavior that may suggest the need for counseling and/or support
  • Consult with and advise families, nursing staff, school administration, and faculty, as appropriate to develop routine care plans and develop a plan of action for students in need of further support
  • Serve as a competent resource to students and their families in need of community-based services, including psychiatric care, mental health evaluations, and specialized treatment
  • Work collaboratively with divisional leadership, the health and wellness team, and  faculty to develop and deliver a highly effective SEL curriculum and program
  • Actively participate in the life of the school
  • Other duties as assigned  

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree, LMHS, MSW, or PhD in counseling
  • Licensure in marriage and family therapy, clinical psychology or clinical social work
  • Current certification to practice in the state of California
  • Minimum of five years post-masters clinical work with adolescents and families; 5-10 years preferred
  • Significant experience with children and adolescent population
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships
  • Excellent communication (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust
  • Highest level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally competent practice, serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in an independent school setting
  • 5-10 years of post-masters work with adolescents and families in a clinical setting
  • Meaningful experience in the development of elementary - and middle school - appropriate social emotional learning programs
  • Fluency in a second language
 

Estimated salary for this position is $75,000 - $125,000 annually, based on experience. In addition to competitive salary, Stevenson offers a generous benefits package that includes a menu of Anthem health plan options, retirement plan contributions, life insurance, and professional development opportunities. Housing support is available for eligible employees and a monthly fuel stipend is provided for employees who commute to campus.  Lunch in the School’s dining facilities is included daily for all employees when school is in session.
